Summary

UNHCR, ‘Europe Region Quarterly Update — Gender-Based Violence (Q4 October – December 2024)’, January 2025

Abstract

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations, disproportionately affecting forcibly displaced women, girls, and marginalized groups across Europe. In a new report, UNHCR underscore the urgent need for enhanced prevention, protection and response measures to fight gender-based violence (GBV) among forcibly displaced women, girls and marginalized groups across Europe particularly in conflict zones, along transit routes and within host communities.

The report outlines how UNHCR responds to the widespread impact of GBV, including sexual violence, on survivors’ safety, mental health, and socio-economic stability, emphasizing the importance of multisectoral, survivor-centred responses. It highlights UNHCR’s partnerships with governments, civil society, and women-led organizations, showcasing initiatives such as safe spaces for survivors, legal aid, psychosocial support, and vocational training programs. Additionally, the report provides insights into emerging challenges, including human trafficking and exploitation, and outlines critical funding gaps that hinder effective GBV response efforts.
