Speaker Information

Christel Querton is a Wallscourt Fellow in Law at the University of the West of England, Bristol, and a member of the Research in Public International Law research group. She is also a Research Affiliate at the Refugee Law Initiative, University of London.

Christel’s research focuses on international refugee law, in particular the protection of persons fleeing contemporary armed conflicts and refugee women. She has published in the Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights, the International and Comparative Law Quarterly and the Refugee Survey Quarterly. Her monograph titled “Conflict Refugees: European Union law and Practice” was published by Cambridge University Press in 2023. The book is based on her PhD research, which was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK).

Christel co-convenes the Women in Refugee Law (WiRL) Network, which aims to recentre refugee women within refugee law, policy and practice and has led various research projects, including that of evaluating country guidance issued by the European Union Agency for Asylum.

In addition to her academic work, Christel has prior experience as a barrister practicing asylum, immigration and human rights law within the UK. She has strong ties to the charity sector, having served in advisory and trustee roles for organizations focused on refugee and asylum issues.
