WiRL PUBLIC SEMINAR SERIES 2024/25
Seminar Four: ‘Safe Countries’ and Women’s International Protection
WEDNESDAY 7th MAY | 2:00pm- 3:15pm (BST) | 1:00pm- 2:15pm (UTC)
This will be the fourth in a series of free online seminars hosted by the Women in Refugee Law (WiRL) network on the theme of “Refuge in a cold climate: the impact on women”. These are public events, ideal for anyone whose work relates to refugee or asylum-claiming women or with an interest in the needs and experiences of refugee women. This series will draw on WiRL’s global membership to apply a gendered lens in analysing the impact of increasing hostility to refugees in different states and contexts.
The concept of ‘safe countries’ has long been used by States to distinguish between and deny protection to asylum claimants on the basis that they have or may have protection in another country. However, there is little analysis from a gender-sensitive perspective within the literature and policy guidance in this area. Join us for this online panel discussion where we will consider this concept in the context of protecting refugee women.
The seminar will feature presentations from
Sonia Lenegan
Immigration, asylum and public law solicitor with over 14 years’ experience and Editor of the Free Movement blog.
Kaajal Ramjathan-Keogh
South African lawyer and Director of the Africa Programme at the International Commission of Jurists with significant experience and expertise in the fields of asylum and refugee protection, migration, citizenship, and statelessness.
Emily Wilbourn
Programme Manager at Asylos with a background in research relating to asylum and refugee issues.
Presentations will be followed by a discussion chaired by Christel Querton (WiRL co-convenor).
